Black Hills Fire Agate (AZ Site 71)

by JerryMarch 1, 2011 Arizona

Directions: Book directions are accurate, but the turn is unmarked on US 191, so be watching right after MP 141. Also, the Thumb Butte site is (we think) at MP 144.
Date: February, March, 2011
Notes: We stayed several days at the BLM Black Hills Rockhound Area. There are several good camp sites nearby and we had [...]

Fallon Agate (NV R3, Site 45)

by JessiJune 22, 2010 Gem Trails by State

Directions: We were not able to find the wash area, but did make it to Green Mountain. The map in the book shows the road going straight past the “pits”, but in reality, the road has to zig-zag around the mine property. But once you are past the mine, any road will get you out [...]

Broadwell Dry Lake (S CA Site 32)

by JerryFebruary 26, 2010 California - Southern

Directions: We only had an afternoon available, so decided to try Site A, but we’re not sure if we got there. We had problems with Mitchell’s map and directions after the turn west away from the dry lake. There was a fork at 2.5 miles not shown on the map. Bear right as the left [...]

Fallon Wonderstone (NV Site 44)

by JerryApril 14, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The directions in Gem Trails are generally accurate, but the map is a little misleading.  At 2.3 miles beyond the cattle guard, you dead-end at a Bentonite clay mining operation, with dirt roads going left and right. Follow the left branch around the clay pit to get to Wonderstone Mountain, also called Rainbow Mountain [...]

Pinos Altos Cutting Materials & Fossils (NM Site 75)

by JerryMarch 17, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The Gem Trails directions are accurate. The turnout on NM SR 15 is exactly 2 miles past the junction with SR 35. Beware NM 15 north of Pinos Altos; it is very steep and winding and has no median stripe. It’s safer to go around through Mimbres via NM 35.

Cooks Peak Carnelian (NM Site 68)

by JerryMarch 11, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The directions in Gem Trails are good with the following updates: County Road A016 is now signed Green Leaf Mine Rd and at 18 miles from NM SR 26 it enters private property with no trespassing signs posted. Also, the mountain is actually spelled Cookes Peak.

Date: March 2009
Notes: We searched various locations all [...]
