Harney Lake (OR Site 70 – GR)

by JerryAugust 17, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: Garret’s site directions are spot on. Google Map
Date: August 2009
Notes: There is plentiful tumbling material scattered about, some already wave polished. Colors tend to be rather drab and for us most of the material is rather uninteresting. We found a couple of pieces of petrified wood, but nothing special. The oolitic agate from up [...]

Fallon Agate (NV Site 45)

by JerryApril 14, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The directions in Gem Trails are generally accurate, but the map is a little misleading.  At 2.3 miles beyond the cattle guard, you dead-end at a Bentonite clay mining operation, with dirt roads going left and right. Follow the right branch around the clay pit to get to Green Mountain, obvious when you see [...]

Lake Lohanton Agate (NV Site 38)

by JerryApril 12, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: You can’t miss this site north of US 50 about 15 miles east of Fallon.
Google Map
Date: April 2009
Notes: The first place we stopped was just across from the Churchill Beach entrance to Lohanton State Recreation Area. We found both agate and jasper, pieces up to 15 or 20 pounds in a variety of colors. [...]

Ramsey Agate (NV Site 39)

by JerryApril 12, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: You will have no trouble finding Gasline Road off US 95A. There is an unlocked BLM gate, just remember to secure it after you enter or leave. Just beyond the gate the road divides; bear straight ahead.
Google Map
Date: April 2009
Notes: Our first stop was atop a rise about 1.6 miles in. We found multi-colored [...]

Fernley Agate (NV Site 37)

by JerryApril 12, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The map and instructions in Gem Trails seem clear enough. There is a dirt road opposite Speedway Road off US 95A. The problem is that there is no collectible rock at the location.
Google Map
Date: April 2009
Notes: About 1/4 mile north of the designated site (intersection of side road and phone line road) we started [...]

Negrito Springs Agate (NM Site 7)

by JerryMarch 26, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The Gem Trails map will get you there; the turn is between Middle and Lower Frisco.
Google Map
Date: March 2009
Notes: Downstream from the crossing is now fenced and no longer accessible. We searched upstream for some way, finding next to nothing. We would not recommend this site.

Highway 12 Agate (NM Site 9)

by JerryMarch 25, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: You will have no trouble locating the highway nor the Apache Creek junction and store. The site runs east from the store 7 miles to the village of Aragon.
Google Map
Date: March 2009
Notes: The better road cuts are closer to the Apache Creek store. They are higher and the soil is softer and still shedding [...]

by JerryMarch 25, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The Gem Trails map will get you there, though FS 289 is now signed county road B017.
Google Map
Date: March 2009
Notes: We searched the wash both ways from the road crossing, finding next to nothing. We would not recommend this site. There’s more agate in the leaver piles at the nearby Apache Creek FS campground.

Pinos Altos Cutting Materials & Fossils (NM Site 75)

by JerryMarch 17, 2009 Gem Trails by State

Directions: The Gem Trails directions are accurate. The turnout on NM SR 15 is exactly 2 miles past the junction with SR 35. Beware NM 15 north of Pinos Altos; it is very steep and winding and has no median stripe. It’s safer to go around through Mimbres via NM 35.
Google Map

Date: March 2009
Notes: We [...]

Anza-Borrego (S CA Site 2)

by JerryMarch 14, 2009 California - Southern

Directions: We had a little trouble finding Shell Canyon as Shell Canyon Rd leads directly into a large rock and gravel quarry. The road into the canyon is a left turn before entering the quarry, but it is unmarked. We parked outside the canyon and hiked in, but with a Jeep or quad you can [...]
