Directions: We just got back from a road trip to NV, and this was the first stop we made. The directions were easy enough to follow, but we did arrive after dark, so that made it a little challenging. There are so many small roads leading to the left and right, so we just tried driving in the general direction the map indicated. In the morning we made it as far as “Yellow Hill”, where we thought we would rock hound for a bit, and ended up staying all day!

Comments: This is one of those places that you dream about…at first you just start picking up handfulls of the rock, but by the end of the day you finally get picky! And I also think this is not a good place to start a rock-hounding road trip from….we added so much rock to our truck the first day, we were scrambling to find places to put it all! But on the other note, it was nice to have such a successful way to start our trip.
The wonderstone is an assortment of colors, and many nice rounded pieces can be found lower on the road. We hiked to the top of Yellow Hill, and got a great view, and some larger pieces (luckily I had the “boss” to carry them back down!) I have yet to throw some of these rocks in the polisher, but by the looks of it, some might hold a good shine.
Like the book says, mosquitoes abound, at least they did the night before when we camped a little west of the site. (There is a Wildlife Refuge nearby, which is where they must come from) At night I also found some flourescent orange “chalcedony?”, and found way too many little scorpions with my UV light! But after a week venturing through NW Nevada, we both agree that this was our favorite place to hound!
