Perkinsville Agate (AZ Site 14)

by Jerry on March 5, 2009

Directions: I visited this site in 2006 and we had little trouble locating the area, coming from Jerome. Mitchell does not descibe the old agate quarry that I remember being the best area to work. I can no longer recall where the old quarry road is in relation to the cattle guard or “agate wash”, but I clearly remember the old road heading steeply up hill on the west side of  County Rd 72. You probably need 4WD to drive up the road, but it is a short walk into the quarry.

Date: December 2006

Notes: There was a lot of float along the old quarry road, both pink and orange agate. We also quarried some cutting material from the rim of the quarry using gads and a heavy hammer. This material was pink agate with some red spotting and made nice cabs.
