Directions: We only had an afternoon available, so decided to try Site A, but we’re not sure if we got there. We had problems with Mitchell’s map and directions after the turn west away from the dry lake. There was a fork at 2.5 miles not shown on the map. Bear right as the left fork goes into some limestone hills. We made the indicated left turn at 3.2 miles, but after that there were a number of additional forks not indicated. We don’t know if we arrived at Site A, but rather than terminating in a wash at the 1.4 mile point, the road continued for a considerable distance. We took the GPS coordinates at about 1.5 miles. It should be noted that many of the ‘roads’ in the hills were tracking sandy washes, so it’s hard to say where Mitchell’s termination may have been. Also, 4WD is recommended on these trails.

Notes: If we were at Site A, we don’t think the site is worth the effort. We found limited amounts of seam agate, a very few of which might be workable; small amounts of brown jasper and jaspagate; a few small pieces of selenite and a considerable amount of seam calcite. There was also a lot of rhyolite thinly-crusted with malachite. We drove about 1/2 mile farther to look again, but found nothing worthwhile. If anyone has better information on any of these sites, please add your comments.
