Sheep Crossing (AZ Site 63)

by Jerry on March 5, 2009

Directions: I visited this site in 2006. The book directions are adequate. We arrived from I-17 via FR 269 and returned via FR 24 to Cave Creek. Both are long, graveled roads, but only the last section descending to the Verde River was rough. We tent camped overlooking the river.

Date: November 2006

Notes: We found scattered chalcedony and agate, including some small lace agates, across the river north of Sycamore Creek. We also discovered a worked out dig for Verde lavender agate on the side of a small peak, just before the road drops down to the river, with nice tumbling pieces in the tailings. At the top of this hill is an old Native American rock-walled lookout. Also along FR 269 several miles from the river is an extensive Native American site, with napping chips everywhere. This site had obviously been plundered. Remember that it is illegal to remove artifacts from Native American sites.
