Directions: The directions in Gem Trails are generally accurate, but the map is a little misleading. At 2.3 miles beyond the cattle guard, you dead-end at a Bentonite clay mining operation, with dirt roads going left and right. Follow the left branch around the clay pit to get to Wonderstone Mountain, also called Rainbow Mountain in my Benchmark road atlas.

Notes: We drove right up the ridge (high clearance recommended) and prospected for larger pieces of stone along both sides of the road. With some digging and pounding we obtained several colorful 10 to 20 lb rocks at 3 different sites. There is an unlimited supply of smaller pieces everywhere.
