Opal Hill Mine (S CA Site 13)

by Jerry on March 14, 2009

Directions: 4th Street is at the south end of Palo Verde next to the gas station. You will go through a ranch just outside of town. Just follow the signs to the Opal Hill mine out past the power line as the Gem  Trails map indicates. If coming from Wiley Well Rd, you will probably need 4WD as the road is very rough.

Date: January 2008

Notes: In 2008 the mine was open 7 days a week. Howard Fisher arrived soon after we did to collect our fees and help us get started. The fee was $30 for working in the pit and $10 for looking through tailings. There were only a couple of seams visible in the pit and  it took some hard chisel work to obtain only a few ounces of fire agate. A more experienced person with better tools would probably do better than I did.

We did not look for any of the other minerals that are mentioned in Gem Trails as nearby.
