Directions: We had a little trouble finding Shell Canyon as Shell Canyon Rd leads directly into a large rock and gravel quarry. The road into the canyon is a left turn before entering the quarry, but it is unmarked. We parked outside the canyon and hiked in, but with a Jeep or quad you can drive in the last mile. Painted Gorge was easy to find following the Gem Trails map.

Notes: We found very little in Shell Canyon, bringing out only a couple of chunks of off-white onyx. We didn’t get anything in Painted Gorge either except for a couple of large blocks of shell concretions composed mostly of small oyster shells, which will “decorate” our yard.
