Round Mountain Fire Agate (AZ Site 77)

by Jerry on March 4, 2009

Directions: Mitchell’s directions are still accurate for this site, but to make it clearer, look for the Lazy B Ranch sign and the gate (see photo). Also, about 5 miles in (after turning at the Round Mountain Rockhound Area sign) you reach the loop road, marked by signs. We took the loop counter-clockwise, though you can go either way. It is a rough ranch road, not recommended for low clearance vehicles or campers. Mitchell’s map doesn’t show the loop, but his total distance from the highway to Site B, 13.8 miles, is just about right for the far end of the loop.

Notes: There is chalcedony (white, red and brown) scattered everywhere beginning at the area Mitchell calls Site A, a couple of miles after turning south into the Round Mountain Rockhound Area. But real fire agate is very scarce. The amount of material available seems to increase the farther in you go, with Site B being very rich. Even there, material containing real fire seems to be rare and requires a lot of patience. We obtained some dark brown material which may ultimately reveal fire with grinding, but we found nothing that obviously has fire.
